Does a new dentist require old dental records before refilling a cavity?

Frank asked:

I need a cavity refilled as the silver is breaking off the end. I was not happy with my old dentist. Will the new dentist fill my tooth right away, or require a dental record before doing anything?

Old records are not necessary. They help only if you had something unusual done. tooth975

They will NOT need a your old records, but they will need current x-rays if you have any. Also note: your insurance company (if you have one) will probably not pay to have that filling replaced if it has been less than two years since the original filling was placed. Just a heads-up because if your insurance denies it, it’s your responsibility! Good Luck! Elizabeth G
