B G asked:

Hi everyone!

One of my back teeth broke in half and needs to be taken care of immediately. However, I’m 4 months pregnant and was wondering if it’s safe and ok to go to a dentist. I will probably need an anesthesia.
My OB won’t be in until tomorrow and I’d like to take care of my tooth today.

Thanks for helping!

phone your dentist and find out – explain you are pregnant, what needs to be done etc.. and then ask their advice – if your still not happy, dont go until your dr is back and you have had chance to ask.

dentists will not unnecessarily put you or your baby at risk schmushe

Yes however your dentist is going to want to make sure from your OB that you can have the novicaine, so you might not be able to get it taken care of until tomorrow, but surely you can try! Been there, I know what its like, they just called my OB’s office to make sure it was ok Nurse Kerr

you are advised to go to the dentist whilst pregnant but the dentist is restricted on what treatment they can offer you so make sure they are aware that you are pregnant.
They know what they can and cannot do all you have to worry about is informing the dentist that you are indeed expcecting a baby dawn w

It is safe to go to the dentist and you should go for regular cleanings while pregnant. You cannot get x-rays, and no anesthesia. They can probably use a numbing agent but you shouldn’t be put to sleep. pyl_strollerstrides

When I was 6 months prego with my first child I had 11 teeth pulled. Make sure your dentist knows that you are pregnant, they are trained to take care of all kinds of patients. I received local anesthesia, which means I was only given the lidocaine shots. Afterwards the only pain medication I could take was tylonel. Being pregnant can really effect your teeth, for some reason your pregnant body drains the nutrient out of your body that keeps your teeth healty. It is safe to go to the dentist as long as you let them know you are pregnant and talk to your OB as soon as possible. transamtm

You should be able to do it with a local. The local anesthetic that that they would use is pretty much the same as what they would give you for an episiotomy. I’ve had a local for stitches and for dental work while PG with no bad effects. I think usually xylocaine/lidocaine. Just make sure they know you are PG! momma2mingbu

Yes it is safe. I was about 11 weeks along when I went to dentist for 1 of my back teeth that broke and he said at that time I was just out of the danger period. He also gave me a bit of local anaesthetic which he said he would not have been able to do had I had problems with blood pressure. He only did a temporary fix for me, once my baby is born I need to have the tooth pulled out.

One thing though – because he only gave me a little bit of anaesthetic, it wore off soon after leaving him and it was very sore.

Everyone is always telling me the things I can and can’t do and most of it is a bunch of nonsense. Speak to your dentist. He’s the best one to advise you. The only thing he said I can’t have is an x-ray. meg

I dont see why not. I had to have a molar AND a Wisdom tooth pulled.. and i was a little over 20wk when i had it done. Both my dentist and OB agree it was better to get it taken care of ASAP rather then waiting til after i had to baby. Im now 27 wks and still going so it depends i guess on the ‘urgency’ of it. alysza81
